A Victorian-era vampire living in the
modern world, Emigh Bennett’s favorite activity is watching people from the
window of her little bookshop. When she spots a woman nearly killed on the
street outside her shop, she rushes to her rescue, and she meets Anise.
The proprietress of a little home business
called “Everything Anise”, Anise crafts one of a kind perfumes all with a touch
of her namesake spice, all with the power to intoxicate and delight the senses.
She is smart, sexy, beautiful, and happens to be a little bit different.
Although Anise is everything Emigh could
ever ask for and more, she can’t quite figure her out. Anise possesses the duality of an innocent
angel and a vivacious vixen. Even if Emigh can ever peel away the multi layers
of Anise to uncover the truth beneath, what will happen when she finally
reveals the truth about herself?
Timid at first,
just a series of little knocks coming from the bookshop downstairs.
Imagination.
Something
probably broke loose from the building and was now banging against the brick,
she guessed.
Just as she
shrugged it off to another problem that could be dealt with in the light of
day, she heard it again. More insistent this time. Chills raised on her arms,
and she jumped to her feet and reached for her robe.
Anise?
Could it possibly
be Anise?
She dashed to the
window and pushed the drapes aside. The icy rain continued to beat a rhythm on
the windowpane. Down below, the street lights dotted light on the deserted
street.
No one.
Wishful thinking.
Then she heard it
again. More insistent now. Without further thought, she raced from her flat,
down the stairs, and made the turn into the darkness of her bookshop. When she
arrived at the door, she stopped.
“Anise, is it
you?” she called out.
“Yes, Emigh. Please
let me in.”
An immediate wild
joy bubbled up into her throat and she threw open the door to see poor little
Anise, her poor little Anise, drenched from head to foot, her hair whipping in
the furious wind. Her heart melted just a little. It was like a repeat of the
day they finally met.
“Emigh, I don’t
care about anything you might have done before we ever met. I just want to be
with you, just the way you are now. Is it possible for us to just start over
again?”
Emigh knew she
had a choice to make at that very moment. Either choice changed both of their
lives forever. Here was Anise, lovely Anise, standing in the freezing rain,
asking to be with her. But she didn’t know what she was letting herself in for.
She took Anise’s
hand into hers and gently pulled her inside the darkened book shop. Tonight,
she would find out…everything. Everything about her, and maybe, about herself
as well.
